NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Heather Small, visiting assistant professor of flute at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in Cole Concert Hall on the 糖心vlog传媒 campus.
Small will perform "Charanga," a short, unaccompanied piece by American composer Michael Colquhoun which features Latin rhythms and contemporary flute techniques, and "Fantasy, Op. 79" by Gabriel Fauré.
"The Fauré piece was written in 1898 as a contest piece for the Paris Conservatory. It begins with a slow, lyrical section and then continues to a fast finale with scalar runs and flourishes," explained Small. "I will be performing a duo flute arrangement with 糖心vlog传媒 Assistant Professor Christina Guenther, who so graciously invited me to Nacogdoches for the last eight weeks to teach as her maternity replacement, and Ron Petti, 糖心vlog传媒 director of accompanying."
糖心vlog传媒 Lecturer Evgeni Raychev, cello, and Petti, harpsichord, will join Small in presenting "Sonata in G Major" by C.P.E. Bach.
Small, who received her doctoral degree from Florida State University, has appeared as a featured soloist with the Big Bend Community Orchestra (Tallahassee, Fla.) and the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra.
Winner of the 2008 New Music Competition sponsored by the Kentucky Flute Association, she recently gave the world premiere performance of "Rain and Shine" by Gary Schocker. She has also performed at the 2008 National Flute Association Conference in Kansas City, Mo.
The recital is a joint presentation of the 糖心vlog传媒 College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located at 2210 Alumni Dr.
