NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will open its 2011-2012 Cole Performing Arts Series with two performances that feature its newly acquired Steinway concert grand piano.
The instrument, selected at Steinway Hall in New York City, was purchased with a donation from California residents George and Peggy Schmidbauer, who for the past several years, have been generous supporters of the fine arts at ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½.
ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ College of Education offers affordable online degree programs
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - In response to the state's need for educational leaders and challenging economic times, Stephen F. Austin State University is making selected education degree programs more accessible and affordable for nontraditional students.
The James I. Perkins College of Education is now offering three degree programs completely online and at reduced prices. The ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ programs include the Master of Education in educational leadership with principal's certification, the Master of Education in early childhood and the Bachelor of Science Head Start degree completer program.
ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ to screen 'Powaqqatsi' film
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - As part of its monthly film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and Friends of the Visual Arts will present "Powaqqatsi: Life in Transformation" at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at The Cole Art Center, in downtown Nacogdoches.

ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ music education professor to deliver lecture
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Mark E. Turner, associate professor of elementary music education will deliver a lecture, "Why Can't I Get Through to Them? A Discussion of Musical Meaning, Ideology and Education," from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in the Music Recital Hall (Room 160) of the Wright Music Building.
The lecture focuses on how current music education practices affirm or alienate students in public school music programs and highlights the work of Lucy Green, professor of music education at the Institute of Education, University of London.
Nacogdoches Naturally plans outdoor adventure
The Stephen F. Austin State University Department of Agriculture will host an Outdoor Family Fun Day at the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Pineywoods Native Plant Center from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 27, as part of its Nacogdoches Naturally program.
"Families will be able to experience a sampling of programs we have planned for the coming year," said Elyce Rodewald, education coordinator for ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Gardens. "They will be able to learn how to set up a tent, practice casting with a fishing pole, learn how to use a compass, try their hand at outdoor cooking, or just go for a leisurely hike."
