NACOGDOCHES, Texas 鈥� Members of the Nacogdoches/Stephen F. Austin State University Barrio Writers program will launch their online journal with a live reading at 6:30 p.m. this Thursday, April 23, on their .

鈥淲e are so excited to share the work of these young local writers with the community,鈥� said Dr. Heather Olson Beal, professor of secondary education in 糖心vlog传媒鈥檚 James I. Perkins College of Education. 鈥淭his reading is a culmination of a year鈥檚 worth of writing for those participating.鈥�

Leslie Cecil, professor of anthropology, geography and sociology, was named Regents Scholar, the highest honor the university may bestow upon a member of the faculty, during the April meeting of the Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents.
 
A member of the faculty since 2007, Cecil reached the rank of professor in 2019 and directs 糖心vlog传媒鈥檚 Archaeological Field School. She has served as department chair and on the Faculty Senate.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas 鈥� From course content and format to internship availability, students and faculty members in Stephen F. Austin State University鈥檚 health science program are experiencing huge changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students in this field are preparing for a variety of careers in public health education and health promotion in settings such as hospitals, governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations and work-site health promotion programs.

When Stephen F. Austin State University moved all classes online due to concerns regarding the impending impact of COVID-19, administrators immediately began calculating the best way to reimburse students for the money they had paid for housing, food service, and on-campus activities that would no longer be accessible. The university refunded approximately $9 million to students.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas 鈥� Dr. Nancy Shepherd, assistant professor in Stephen F. Austin State University鈥檚 School of Human Sciences, received the 2020 Leader of the Year Award from the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Texas Affiliate.

The award, which was presented online during the AAFCS-TX board meeting earlier this month due to the COVID-19 pandemic, honors family and consumer sciences professionals who have made significant contributions to the field through their involvement with AAFCS.  

NACOGDOCHES, Texas 鈥� The Counseling Clinic at Stephen F. Austin State University is accepting new clients and temporarily waiving all fees during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though in-person appointments aren鈥檛 possible as 糖心vlog传媒 students shelter in place in their hometowns and residents in Nacogdoches County follow stay-at-home orders, the clinic is helping clients by phone and Zoom from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Appointments on Fridays and after 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday also can be made by calling (936) 468-1041.
