MLK Day of Service projects to benefit local schools


The ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Volunteer Program and the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Stephen F. Austin State University will help Nacogdoches ISD schools in multiple service projects for the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 18.

ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ students, faculty and staff, along with community members, will partner up to complete 10 service projects in one day for local elementary, middle and high schools. The projects vary from creating a leveled book room to building benches and
revitalizing flowerbeds in front of schools.

Tickets are now on sale for the vocal dinner theater, "Some Enchanted Evening: the Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein," to be presented by the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ School of Music and Friends of Music at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - East Texas piano enthusiasts can take in a weekend of outstanding piano performances as international pianists compete for almost $13,000 in prize money during the George and Peggy Schmidbauer Young Artist Competition to be held on Saturday, Jan. 23, and Sunday, Jan. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University.

The Mast Arboretum at Stephen F. Austin State University will host a Garden Guide training class beginning with an orientation session from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 19 at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. The class prepares volunteers to give guided tours of the ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Mast Arboretum and Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

Saturday event at ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½

An event at Stephen F. Austin State University's Pineywoods Native Plant Center on Jan. 9 will offer visitors an opportunity to cook a delicious camp-stove breakfast, learn about fire safety, and contribute to a bottomland hardwood wetlands restoration project by planting trees along the trails near the center.

Registration open for ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Music Preparatory Division classes


NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Registrations are now being accepted for the spring classes offered through the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division.

Students, including adults, may register for weekly private lessons in voice, harp, piano, classical guitar, rock guitar, violin, Suzuki violin, viola, cello, bass, percussion and other requested instruments. The 16-week classes, taught by upper-level music preparatory faculty, begin the week of Jan. 11, and the 12-week classes, taught by ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ student instructors, begin the week of Feb. 8.

ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ Kindermusik registration open


NACOGDOCHES - Parents of newborns through 7-year-olds can register their children for Kindermusik classes offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division that will begin the week of Feb. 1.

Karen Greer and Erin Tang, certified and licensed Kindermusik teachers, will offer four different age-appropriate classes in which parents and children will play, learn, sing, dance, create and share in the fun of making music together, said Pat Barnett, director of the Music Preparatory Division.

ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ names new vice president for development


Sid Walker, former director of Stephen F. Austin State University's first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign, has been named vice president for development at the university.

Walker worked at ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ from 1997 to 2000 and was successful at securing commitments of more than $40 million for the campaign. He currently serves as associate vice chancellor for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and will begin his new duties at ÌÇÐÄvlog´«Ã½ on Jan. 4.
